Benoni

Benoni at a glance

Benoni is a city on the East Rand whose existence is mainly due to the discovery of gold in September 1887. Since 2000, it has been part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

Benoni has a strong suburban charm and comprises numerous appealing, tree-lined suburbs; quite dissimilar to many other East Rand towns, which tend to be more industrialized.

These days, Benoni is very diverse, with people of every colour and denomination living here. Over time gold mining has dwindled in importance. Today the town concentrates more on industry & services and is used as a service hub for other East Rand towns such as Brakpan, Nigel and Springs.

Benoni has a good transportation system via rail, road and air. Benoni has access to the following routes: the N12, R23, R29 and the R51; and is also close to the airport.

Local attractions include Willowmoore Park (which is a provincial and One Day International Cricket venue), a museum, Bunny Park, many lakes, Lake Golf Club, dune boarding at Mount Mayhem or shopping at the Lakeside Shopping Mall or Northmead Square. The Lakeside Shopping Mall was built in the shape of a Mississippi Steamboat on one of the lakes.
